From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-Ernie, Dusty, and Swimming Pool, the gang from The Beloved Dearly (S & S, 2002), are back. A hopeless baseball player, Ernie shows his true nature when he appoints himself manager of the Little League team. Although he is a little cloudy on exactly what his duties are, he knows he gets to run the show, which is what he does best. He assigns a reluctant Dusty to paint the sadly neglected wall of the ballpark. Swimming Pool is the team's star, but her mother has threatened to make her quit if she doesn't go to charm school. The girl tries hard at Miss Ginger's school, but flunks out. Ernie then decides to go into the charm school business to ensure Swimming Pool a diploma and a spot on the baseball team. In this world, adults remain on the periphery--much as children see them in real life--and are not fully developed. In contrast, readers get to know the three main characters very well. The book has a well-balanced mix of description and realistic dialogue. Although it would help to have read the earlier title, where more about the characters is revealed, including the origin of Swimming Pool's name, this enjoyable novel can certainly stand on its own.--Nancy P. From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. Ernie, Swimming Pool, and Dusty, the kids from The Beloved Dearly (2003), return in a story that centers on a baseball team and a charm school. Always the entrepreneur, Ernie is now the self-appointed manager of the Central Comets. Swimming Pool is the team's star (well, only) pitcher, and she's being yanked because her mother is determined to curb her tomboy ways by sending her to charm school. Like the previous book, which was also set in the present, this harks back to another era (Do charm schools even exist any more?), and problems stack up--a new charm school must be started after Swimming Pool gets dumped from the old one. The humor is forced in places, but there are also some quiet moments, as when Ernie and Dusty talk about their disappointments with each other. Fans of the first book will especially like this companion. Ilene Cooper

Review
Bruce Coville I loved Doug Cooney's "The Beloved Dearly, " which was one of the freshest, funniest books I had read in years. "I Know Who Likes You" is just as delightful, a delicious romp that had me laughing out loud as I raced through its pages. Ernie, Swimming Pool, and Dusty are terrific characters, and it was great to see them back in action. Doug has a knack for portraying kids who are real but quirky, creating a kind of contemporary Our Gang that any red-blooded kid would be thrilled to hang out with.

I Know Who Likes You

By: Doug Cooney

Swimming Pool is the only girl on a boy's baseball team.

She is probably the best pitcher and she is maybe a tiny bit better than Ron-Jon who is a boy on her team.

She has her signature pitch The Cincinnati Special, which is her way to strike out at least half of the other team.

A day before their practice started, Swimming Pool's mom told her that she has to go to charm school.

When she told the boys at practice about charm school they all laughed at her.

Ernie, a player on her team likes to do things like a girly girl such as baking cookies.

I LOVED this book and I think it had amazing word choices such as groaned. I hope you read this book.

The Polyglots (Neversink), by William Gerhardie

The Anglo-Russian author William Gerhardie was hailed by writers including Graham Greene, Edith Wharton, Evelyn Waugh and others as a “genius,” and this, his long-out-of-print second novel, is generally acclaimed as his comic masterpiece—not to mention “the most influential English novel of the twentieth century,” according to William Boyd.

It tells the unforgettable tale of an eccentric Belgian family living in the Far East during the turbulent years just after the First World War, which displaced them, and the Russian Revolution, which impoverished them.

Recounted by a conceited young English cousin who visits during a military mission, the story is filled with a host of fascinatingly idiosyncratic characters—depressives, obsessives, sex maniacs, and hypochondriacs—often forced to choose between absurdity and tragedy. Yet Gerhardie depicts them as both charming and poignant, as they each struggle for love and safety in tumultuous times . . . and the protagonist finds his conceit shredded as he falls head over heels in love with one of them.

Gerhardie’s portraits of Europeans in exile, attempting to escape from the era’s upheavals, draws on his own experiences as an officer in the British Mission. He has summoned up a world adrift, where war and revolution have broken up the old order, but nothing has come to replace it. And he does it with unforgettable humor and a sharp eye for the absurd.

Hilarious, poignant, panoramic in scope, The Polyglots redeems, from the Babel of the interwar period, a stirring vision of love and human sympathy.

Review
“The most influential English novel of the twentieth century.” —William Boyd

"To my generation Gerhardie was the most important new novelist to appear in our young life." -- Graham Greene

"I have talent, but he has genius." -- Evelyn Waugh

"One of the funniest writers of the century." -- Philip Toynbee

"A comic writer of genius...but his art is profoundly serious: underneath the shamelessness and farce, his themes are the great ones, love greif and death, of intimations of joy and our imprisonment in the world of flesh and time." -- The Sunday Times

From the Publisher
The Polyglots is the story of an eccentric Belgian family living in the Far East in the uncertain years after World War I and the Russian Revolution. The tale is recounted by their dryly conceited young English relative, Captain Georges Hamlet Alexander Diabologh, who comes to stay with them during a military mission. Teeming with bizarre characters ‹ depressives, obsessives, paranoiacs, hypochondriacs, and sex maniacs ‹ Gerhardie paints a brilliantly absurd world where the comic and the tragic are profoundly and irrevocably entwined.

About the Author
WILLIAM GERHARDIE (1895 - 1977) was one of the 20th century's most underappreciated masters. Of Anglo-Russian upbringing, he deftly combined the keen observations of Russian social realism with the sly wit of the English romantic comedy, all while honing his own particular comic edge on the dawning absurdity of the new century.

Had surprisingly never heard of Gerhardie. Am now a diehard fan. William Boyd calls it, “the most influential English novel of the twentieth century.” It tells the unforgettable story of an eccentric Belgian family living in the Far East during the turbulent years just after the First World War, which displaced them, and the Russian Revolution, which impoverished them. Really stunning writing.

Don't bother. I found it silly, unfunny and boring. Vaguely interesting as a surreal biography of Lord Beaverbrook.

The Polyglots
By Richard Cunningham
"...the glorious twin towers of All Souls stood, wise and quiet, in the nacre-coloured air. They had stood there long before I had come into the world, and they would stand there long after I had ceased to be."

Partly autobiographical, Gerhardie's second novel and the one that put him firmly on the map. A weird funny original work of comic genius. Published in 1925, the same year as The Great Gatsby; the beginning of what I call a decade and a half of quality pre-war Anglo/Irish/American literature which concludes with For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Last Tycoon in 1940. This period includes F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Henry Miller(censored), Ezra Pound, James Joyce(Ulysses finished in 1914, first officially printed in France in 1922, the United States in 1934, and Britain in 1936, thanks to censorship. He died in 1941), D.H. Lawrence(censored), Ford Madox Ford, George Orwell, T.S. Eliot, Malcolm Lowry, Nicholas Monsarrat, Graham Greene, John Cowper Powys, and Aldous Huxley.
A worthy companion novel, though written later and different in style and somewhat in POV is Richard McKenna's, "The Sand Pebbles" concerning Western commercial & military presence in the Far East.

The Crescent Obscured: The United States and the Muslim World, 1776-1815, by Robert Allison

From the beginning of the colonial period to the recent conflicts in the Middle East, encounters with the Muslim world have helped Americans define national identity and purpose. Focusing on America's encounter with the Barbary states of North Africa from 1776 to 1815, Robert Allison traces the perceptions and mis-perceptions of Islam in the American mind as the new nation constructed its ideology and system of government.

"A powerful ending that explains how the experience with the Barbary states compelled many Americans to look inward . . . with increasing doubts about the institution of slavery." —David W. Lesch, Middle East Journal

"Allison's incisive and informative account of the fledgling republic's encounter with the Muslim world is a revelation with a special pertinence to today's international scene." —Richard W. Bulliet, Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"This book should be widely read. . . . Allison's study provides a context for understanding more recent developments, such as America's tendency to demonize figures like Iran's Khumaini, Libya's Qaddafi, and Iraq's Saddam." —Richard M. Eaton, Eighteenth Century Studies

The Crescent Obscured
By Christine Saalbach
The Crescent Obscured reads like a historical novel. Robert Allison packs the book with romance, adventure, and action. Among his heroes are Steven Decatur and James Riley, and others of this fascinating period of United States history. Allison writes with a wry sense of humor, bringing history alive. The Barbary pirates, the stuff of legends and fairy tales, were real. Allison demystifies the origin of the words to the Marine song: "to the shores of Tripoli."
Author Robert Allison's accounts are so vivid, you can almost imagine a movie script in progress. The last chapter of The Crescent Obscured is another extraordinary story, that of James Riley, captain of the Commerce, and his crew. Shipwrecked in the Mediterranean near the Spanish Sahara, James Riley endured two years of captivity, remaining all the while concerned about his crew and trusting Providence for their deliverance. Riley wrote a book about his experiences, called Travels and Sufferings: An Authentic Narrative of the Loss of the American Brig Commerce, Wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa in the Month of August 1815. Not only did Riley recite the events of the captivity in his book, but also made references to the state of slavery. Riley's book was one of six that Abraham Lincoln claimed most influenced him.
The Crescent Obscured is history made fun to read. Robert Allison teaches us what influence the Muslim world had on the infant nation. We learn that there certainly was much more than we might have expected before reading Allison's wonderful book.

The Crescent Obsured
By A Customer
I enjoyed the book immensely because in recounting the specific events that led up to the Battle of Tripoli, the author gives insight into issues present in current Muslim World/Western World conflict and provides a historical close-up of US arrogance. The US denounces the enslavement of a few Americans by Muslims while at the same time building a US economy based on the enslavement of millions of Africans.
In 1785, while American diplomats struggle to develop treaties with North Africa, three "North African strangers" arrive in Virginia. Instead of the friendly reception expected by the strangers, they were locked up, interrogated, and soon sent back to their own country. To prevent "dangerous aliens" from ever posing such a threat again, the Virginia legislature passed the Virginia act. The act gave the governor the power to deport aliens from countries at war with the US.
Thus begins the reader's journey to understanding the beginning of the Western world versus Muslim world conflict-a conflict that predates the existence of a United States. The book ends with the United States humbling the Muslim states of North Africa by declaring and winning a war against Tripoli. From beginning to end the reader is given account after account of varied forms of moral outrage shown by the US towards the Muslim capture of american ships and the enslavement of American crews.

The crescent in context
By Matthew Wilding
I'll begin with outright shock at the review before mine, which characterizes this book as in the tone of academic elitism.

On the contrary, having suffered through volumes of history written for scholars, this book was refreshingly written for a reader of non-fiction generally. While enjoying a background in history that is rather extensive, my grasp of the Barbary Wars can only be explained as limited, and Allison's history served as an excellent buffer of not only the conflicts in Africa, but their social and literary impacts in the United States at the time and their impact in shaping the Islamo-American relations of centuries to come.

While this book does not represent Professor Allison's most widely accessible work, it is clearly an early symbol of his academic abilities, which has been echoed and extrapolated since.
