Laura M. Justice, Ph.D., is a clinical speech-language pathologist and applied researcher in early childhood language and literacy development, communication disorders, and educational interventions. Dr. Justice is Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University, is Editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and is Founding Editor of Evidence-Based Practice Briefi. Dr. Justice's research activities have received grant support from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, the International Reading Association, the National Institutes ofHealth, and the U. S. Department of Education's Institute ofEducation Sciences. She has received such awards and honors for her work as the Editor's Award for the American Journal of5peech-Language Pathology, the Early Career Publication Award from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division for Research, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering from President G. W. Bush, and a Fulbright Scholar Award. Justice has published nearly 100 articles, chapters, and reports on early education and language lliteracy intervention and has authored or edited seven books.
Helen K. Ezell, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in the study of child language development and disorders. In addition to her research in child language, she has an interest in the preparation of teacher-scholars in speechlanguage
pathology. Dr. Ezell is affiliated as adjunct faculty with the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches in the areas of communication science and disorders.

I had to purchase this book for a college course I was taking. Honestly, I don't even remember learning all of the syntax in this book when I was younger. There's a wealth of information here and each chapter has questions to test your understanding at the end. I particularly liked the use of examples that were given; they made the information much more easy to process and remember.

I own a couple of Andreas books..

I definitely believe that sun can heel you and Andreas explain it in this booklet in plain English.
This booklet is actually a part from his bigger book Timeless Secrets of Health and Rejuvenation so if you own it you don't need this one but if you don't you can find here very useful information.

It makes sense.

This is an excellent book and one that you might want to share with family or friends who have been diagnosed with skin cancer. The author suggests that the sun is not something to be avoided for fear of cancer. In fact, he says that research has proven that skin cancers occur most frequently in those who seldom spend time outdoors; who are exposed to artificial light during most of their work time; and those who use sunscreen and sunglasses to block out the sun's rays. I found this very interesting because I have 3 siblings. One works in construction and is obviously outside a lot. The other two are office workers. Guess which two got skin cancer. The author also brings diet into the equation, suggesting that Vitamin D is essential; that some polyunsaturated fats up the risk of cancer, and that liver toxicity needs to be addressed. Plus so much more.

There is a wealth of information and food for thought here. I found the whole book fascinating. Highly recommend.

Heal Yourself with Sunlight

Like everything else that Andreas writes about the idea that sun is good for you makes so much sense, look at how many Asians in Great Britain get rickets which is due to a lack of sunlight. The trouble is there is always money involved, the cosmetic companies must make so much money from sunscreens and advertising is so successful so before we know it we are all brainwashed into buying these products. Well I have always believed sun was good for you because I remember learning that at school (many, many years ago) and the sun gives you the most vitamin D because it is more easily absorbed than taking it in tablet form. I did think that you probably needed sunscreen in strong sunlight but the reality is no one should be sunbathing when the sun is at it's peak (11am till 3pm), in other words you still need to be sensible. For the last two years, since reading this book I have carried out an experiment on myself and not used sunscreen, I haven't had any sunburn whilst in Great Britain or whilst on holiday in Turkey but have developed a very natural tan which seems to last all the year round. So I recommend this book to anyone and also all the other books Andreas has written, I just wish I had found them sooner.

About the Author

Xon De Ros, University Lecturer in Modern Spanish Literature, University of Oxford

Xon De Ros studied for her BA at the University of Barcelona and her DPhil in Oxford. From 1999 to 2006 she was Senior Lecturer at King's College London. Since 2006 she has taught Spanish literature at the University of Oxford where she is Tutorial Fellow in Spanish at Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville College. Her areas of research are Spanish Modernism, with a particular interest in the interrelations between poetry and the visual arts. She has also published on women's studies painting and Spanish cinema.

Good introduction to functional programming in Haskell

I found this small book a good introduction to functional programming in Haskell, and covers basic concepts such as functions, lists, recursion, lazy evaluation. However, it covers monads only cursory and lacked practical examples. For example, it only showed small snippets of Haskell code without some nice applications or coverage of tools about running, testing, debugging programs. I found a beta version of another book on the web at [...] much easier because it actually shows examples in GHC. I am still looking for a bit more advanced reference for Haskell and hope Simon Peyton-Jones writes some book on it.

A great introduction to Haskell

Hutton's book is an excellent introduction for programmers approaching Haskell for the first time. Hutton keeps the focus on the core concepts of the language and avoids the advanced topics (of which there are many). The book is fairly light at 171 pages, but for an introductory text I consider this appropriate - a weighty tome might intimidate a reader who just wants a introductory overview. That said, if you are already an intermediate level Haskell hacker, you will likely not find anything of use in this text.

Who's the audience?

I'm a mathematician who decided Haskell would be a good language in which to perform my latest computing task, so I looked around for learning materials. After going through some web tutorials and starting into _Real World Haskell_, I decided that maybe I should try something more basic and systematic, so I read Hutton's book. I'm glad I did, and I think I understand Haskell much better now than I did before.

The form factor of this book is really odd, essentially that of a thick magazine, like _Wired_. It has huge outer margins, with the text compressed into the middle in tiny-looking 9-point type. Thankfully, the printing is crisp, so the text is fairly readable. Choosing to set the code samples in a proportional font seems like a curious choice, especially for Haskell, where spacing matters. For a computing book, the writing is very elegant, although the organization is somewhat less systematic than I was expecting.

The most questionable aspect of this book is its audience. Ostensibly, it is written for a first university course for students with "[n]o previous programming experience", but I'm not sure how good of a fit it would be, especially for a typical U.S. student. Concepts like pointers, parsers, stacks, and compilers seem to be mentioned with the idea that readers would already know what those are. The examples in the book are largely drawn from Hutton's professional publications in functional programming. To me, these were interesting, but it's not clear how much new students would appreciate them. Contrast that with the fact that mathematical induction is discussed at length as if the reader might be unaware of it, and on page 147 the reader is referred back to a previous derivation for justification of the FOIL formula from basic algebra! The selection of exercises seemed kind of sparse for a textbook.

_Programming in Haskell_ is a quick read, and (if you can afford it) is probably a good stepping stone on the way to being a good Haskell programmer.

Cheaply made with high quality prices

The quality of the content of the 6th edition is, for the most part, good. My primary concern is that Prentice Hall has started to make cheap textbooks without lowering the price for students. I've taught with this textbook in the past and the 5th edition is printed on a much higher quality paper.

This one can be hard to read at times since you can see the text on the other side of the page. The pages of this textbook look like what you would expect from a cheap workbook. For $76, I'll find a different textbook that will be worth the price or see if the bookstore can get its hands on enough copies of the 5th edition.

I got delivered the exact book I needed for the course in excellent condition. I just think that the school could have chose a better text. It's definitely overpriced, but texts tend to be because the publishers know there are those like us who HAVE to have it for a course.

A good conversation starter for Spanish learners

Good for people who are learning Spanish that like to read on current issues. It was perfectly relevant, and I will be ordering another copy soon for my class. Most of the topics had strong points on both sides, with only one or two weak arguments. It also did a great job of highlighting grammar concepts with note sections, vocabulary, and practice. Overall a good book.

The concept of vulnerability was first presented in Chapter 1 and defined as a measure of the propensity of an object, area, individual, group, community, country, or other entity to incur the consequences of a hazard. As this section illustrates, measurement of vulnerability results from a combination of physical, social, economic, and environmental factors or processes. These factors are the primary determinant features that dictate how the likelihood and/or consequences components of risk are increased or decreased.

It is important to first clarify the difference between the concepts of vulnerability and exposure, which are often confused. The two words are used interchangeably to describe how a country, region, or community is likely to experience a certain hazard. However, this is incorrect, as the discussion on vulnerability factors shows. The United Nation’s risk reduction document Living with Risk embodies this concept, saying, “While most natural hazards may be inevitable, disasters are not” (ISDR, 2004).

While vulnerability defines the propensity to incur consequences, exposure merely suggests that the individual, structure, community, nation, or other subject will be exposed to the hazard. For instance, one might say, “The Spanish are vulnerable to drought,” meaning that Spain regularly experiences the drought hazard. But this statement implies more than the speaker intended. The use of the word “vulnerable” implies that the population is likely to incur negative consequences as a result of factors that make it less likely to protect its citizens and built and natural environments from harm, not simply that drought happens there. The reality, as Figures 3–9 and 3–10 illustrate, is that while Spain is regularly exposed to drought, the nation is not vulnerable to its consequences.

Great for those new to genograms

Through these simple instructions, our family patterns, both good and bad, are revealed. This helps us to make better decisions about whether or not to give in to what is 'just the way we do things', or seriously consider and/or re-define what you really believe in. I give this book to everyone I work with in premarital counseling; by working on their family diagrams, they come to know better what they will be like as a married person. I highly recommend this book.
