There is a growing need for new adhesives for technical and medical applications! The nature uses adhesion in a host of ways and we can learn a great deal from this. Adhesive systems of potential interest need to be thoroughly analyzed and the common underlying principles and unique features of natural adhesives have to be understood.

The first part of this book gives an overview of selected adhesive systems from the plant and animal kingdoms. It describes their structure (morphology), function (secretion), and what kinds of adhesives are produced (composition). Knowledge about biological adhesives raises the question as to how these systems can benefit our daily lives.

The second part of this book focuses on technical and medical applications of biological adhesives and biomimetic systems. The use of renewable biological components in industrial adhesives is also highlighted as is the use of biomimetic and bio-adhesives in basic and applied research. Medical and surgical applications of these adhesives such as wound healing and the bonding of tissues/organs are also covered.

This publication can be readily used in conjunction with the book “Biological Adhesives” by Smith and Callow (2006) which describes the basis of bonding systems and their chemical and mechanical properties and means that readers now have a comprehensive overview of biological adhesive systems and their applications!

About the Author

Dr. Dipl.-Biol. Janek von Byern:

While he was studying at the Johann W. Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main and during several research stays at the private marine research station IFMB in Giglio, Italy, cephalopods and their complexity (flexibility, color adaptation, and intelligence) aroused Janek von Byern’s interest. With his diploma thesis he focused on the pharmacology and histology of the blood circulation system in Sepia officinalis.

Inspired by Uwe Piatkowski from the IFM-GEOMAR  institute he began to consider the abstract thought that cephalopods could also produce glue. During further marine research stays he met Prof. Dr. J. Ott from the Department of Marine Biology of the University of Vienna and finally moved in 2003 to their Core Cell Imaging and Ultrastructure research facility.

In his PhD he characterized the adhesive system of the pygmy squid Idiosepius and started to analyze the glue components biochemically. Sampling led him to South Africa, Mozambique, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and Australia where he collected different species, which raised new knowledge of other glue-producing animals and their attachment behavior.

Dr. Dipl.-Biol. Ingo Grunwald:

is a research associate and project manager in the "Biomolecular Surfaces and Materials Design" work group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) in Bremen, Germany. The Fraunhofer IFAM is the largest independent research organization in Europe in the area of industrial adhesive bonding technology. Ingo Grunwald's work at the Fraunhofer IFAM focuses on biomimetic materials and biofunctionalized surfaces. He studied biology at University of Hanover (Germany), with biochemistry and molecular biology being his main areas of interest. His Ph.D. work concerned the purification, characterization, and molecular cloning of a new sugar-binding protein. Research time spent at Cancer Research UK and at the TECHNION in Israel broadened his interest in protein interactions, protein analysis, and proteomics. He studied the functionality of material surfaces with designed proteins in the field of nanobiotechnology as part of postdoctoral work at the University of Stuttgart (Germany). Ingo Grunwald has a lectureship in bioanalytical methods and surface biofunctionalization at the University of Bremen (Germany).

Simply beautiful...

This particular poem is my favorite Robert Frost poem, and is one of my top five favorite poems. I was hoping that this book would portray the simple beauty and nuances of this poem, to read to my granddaughter. It more than met my expectations. Even my husband, who is a photographer and who doesn't read as much as I do, found the artwork in this book to convey beautifully the words of Frost's poem.

This poem was not intended for children, and has many facets to it. But good poetry must be taught and appreciated early, and this book will help parents and teachers to show appreciation for poetry. If it doesn't start with the parents and teachers, then the children are never exposed to it.

Whenever I read this poem, and now this book, it conveys a sense of peace, a sense of being quiet, of learning to look for the beauty in the world around you. This should be a classic.

Breath Taking

I remember this poem from 4th grade (I am now 40). Even to this day, I could recite the 1st four lines and I haven't read the poem since 4th grade....until now. I now have a 3 yr old daughter and am searching for books to read to her above her age level. Seeking to introduce her to various subjects, authors, etc. Remembering this poem, I went specifically in search of it and found this book. I LOVE it! And so does my daughter. I love the gentleness of the illustrations, the little splash of color and the quietness it offers. My daughter loves the color, the horse and various animals, and, as any child does, searching for the hidden animals in some of the pages. When we sit and read this book, it's not just a one time reading. It's at least 4 times. I highly recommend this book not just for the literary benefit, but also for the little bit of quiet snuggling time you get........What can be better than that?

A Child's introduction to a perfect poem

I have always loved this poem. I would not have thought it could be produced so a child/young adult would understand or want to understand the poem. However put into the style of a childrens picture book Susan Jeffers has achieved this. This view she communicates generously to the reader via sketch-book imaging. By highlighting the sleigh-rider in colour it adds extra strength to the narrative, while everything else is just balck and white drawing. Susan Jeffers manages to give on one hand a simple picture story and at the same time present the child with one of the most beautiful of Robert Frosts's poems and hopefully make them think further as to what means. To make a child think and be aware of the intangables in tanglables is an extroadinary feat.
Should be given to every child.

A Thorough Pleasure

This collection of short stories showcases Ursula Le Guin's absolute mastery of her craft. Of course, in any collection of stories, one will have favorites. The nice thing about this collection is the lesser stories are generally so, not because they are poor, but because they seem a bit incomplete; one wants more, to read more, to explore more, to roll the ideas and the settings around in one's mind.

My favorite story is the first. 'Semley's Necklace' is a touching tale of a sweet young woman, a bit naive, whose misunderstanding alters lives permanently.

Another favorite, though one very unsettling- 'The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas'. Omelas is a wonderful town, where everyone is happy, content, the weather is pleasant. But there is a price to all good things. A terrible price, and one that not all are willing to pay.

OK, a third good one: 'The Rule of Names' is set in Earthsea, a trilogy (later expanded) where wizards exist, and go to school to hone their craft (sound like Harry Potter? Only 20 years earlier!)

Highly recommended. Enjoy!

I bought this book for the first story "Semley's Necklace" however; all of them will surpass your expectations. Ursula has a unique way with words that rival her tales.

Godsend for the new caretaker

I was put into the role of medical decision maker without warning when my otherwise healthy mother fell down the stairs and broke her neck. I am grateful that she already had all the important legal documents I needed, advance medical directive and durable power of attorney, in place. So I had the power to make decisions, but not the knowledge. In meeting after meeting with helpful hospital staff and the person in charge of helping me file for Medicaid I felt overwhelmed by my lack of understanding of what the terms they were using really meant. Last night I bought this for Kindle and didn't go to bed until I had finished all the applicable chapters.

In the coming year she may need anything from living at a skilled nursing facility to in-home care, and thanks to this book I understand now what each type of care is called, what exactly that entails, how much to expect it to cost, how to find information on facilities, and how much help to expect in paying for it from insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. The chapters on what Medicare and Medicaid do and don't cover based on marital status and assets were detailed yet totally understandable. This book has made a huge difference to me and I will be recommending it to my mother's siblings as well.

A Gem of a Book

This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. An idealistic young American, who finds botany more compelling than his family's desires for status and wealth, goes to a Caribbean island to teach the locals how to grow Dwarf Cavendish bananas. He get kidnapped by the local revolution; there is an island custom: "One son goes into law, one goes into the priesthood, and one into the revolution; so the family is insured against everything, including the Second Coming." Disturbed by the inefficiency of his captors, he uses his Boy Scout training to teach them woodcraft and organizational skills. As his beard grows out, he starts looking more and more like the leader of the revolution, who is not at all pleased by this. I don't want to give away the whole plot, but I've read this many times over several decades and it remains hilarious throughout. Woody Allen took some of the plot - without attribution - for his movie "Bananas"; he would have done better to have made a straight adaptation, because this book is far funnier than that movie.

Fun read for readers of all age groups

RIchard Powell's books have been out of print for some time. Thanks to the e-book revolution, the (almost) complete collection is now made available to all Kindle users. I read a few of the author's books, the Thai language translation, in my younger days. Among those was Don Quixote, USA. For some reasons, the Thai book title was changed to "New Dawn in San Marco" causing me no end of grief tracking down the original English version.

RIchard Powell was an amazing writer in view of the range of subject matters he covered. Though wry humor seems to permeate most of his work. "Don Quixote, USA" went to the extreme as a light-hearted satire that made fun of the American relation with the rest of the world.

The story revolves around a newly graduate and rather naive Arthur with a degree in agriculture, banana plantation to be exact. He joined the Peace Corps out of desire to better the lot of humankind by revolunizing banana plantation. Unfortunately for Arthur, San Marco, the fictitious island nation presumably in the Caribbean, to which he was sent, was predictably under the thumb of a military despot. The Generalismo thought Peace Corps was just a front for CIA and didn't have banana in mind when he thought the American government had sent him a CIA agent. Arthur was caught between the bumbling and crooked military and the Fidel Castro-inspired, but equally clueless, revolutionary force, the leader of which looked remarkably like a more muscular and fierce version of our Arthur. All the fun ensues as Arthur's wide-eyed good-natured innocence and naivete inevitably led him to always do the unexpected.

The pacing of the story is tight to the point of being too short. If the book had been written maybe 20 years later than it was, I would have thought the author had a comedy movie adaptation in mind. But this is not really a criticism, not really. The book must have been written with younger audience in mind. Characters are mostly carricatures of the respective stereotypes to the point of being cartoonish. If you're looking for a fun read you can pass around to younger members in your family, I can highly recommend this book.

I read this book as a kid. My gramma had it, and I remember laughing my head off. In my personal vernacular are the terms El Stupido and El Stupendo, from those years ago. The basic plot of a dork turning into a superhero way out of his comfort zone (a novice Peace Corp vol in a banana republic beset with revolutionaries) is both funny and inspiring. And the name Arthur Peabody Goodpasture in itself is a winner.

When I saw this available for Kindle a few weeks ago, I snapped it up and will re-read it far sooner than this last time!
