Not user friendly
By A Customer
I have to disagree with the reviewer who said that this book is user friendly. I found it too short and badly written. Many sentences are clumsily phrased and incomprehensible. Basic concepts are explained so perfunctorily (i.e. in one or two short sentences) that it's often impossible for a novice to understand what's being said. I appreciate the authors' efforts to present a streamlined and logical version of Vedic Astrology, but I wish they had presented it in a more digestible form.
I think this book may be adequate for someone already familiar with Vedic concepts, but otherwise the authors' inscrutable prose will, I fear, defeat many beginners (like me).

Excellent Synthesis of Vedic Astrology
By Stephen Byrnes
The Systems Approach to Vedic astrology is, simply put, the most concise and accurate approach to the subject. This book is a summary explanation of the salient features of Vedic astrology and is very "user friendly."
When I started to study Vedic, I was getting confused by all of the intricacies of various writers, conflicting information on gems and other remedies, which planets are malefics/benefics for which rising sign, which houses are detrimental, etc. David Hawthorne's book cleared all the confusion for me.
If you've been getting mired in the muck of Vedic astrology, give yourself a break and get this book. You will quickly learn how to assess a chart, how to spot weaknesses (and what to do about them), and how to generally predict trends for the future. The example charts at the end of the book are excellent and illustrative of the principles of Systems Approach.

However, all three have two continuing characters in them. The second in the series is "Tough Talk, Tender Kisses" and the third one is "A Tough Man's Woman."Hope you enjoy them!

Enjoyable Native American/Western Historical Romance
By MelissaB
Tess Summar lives in a small Montana town named False Hope. She lives with her married brother John, who is the town's doctor, and helps him with his practice. One day a young Indian girl is brought to her brother who is dying from a gunshot. The town's Marshall says her brother accidently shot her while he was trying to get away while stealing horses. Before the girl dies, she tells Tess that the Marshall was the person who shot her, not her brother. She gets Tess to promise to help her brother, who she thinks was shot and probably went to a nearby cave injured. Tess thinks the girl is delirious but agrees to ease her mind. When the Indian girl's Blackfoot family comes to collect her body, she tells one of the warriors that the girl thinks her brother is injured in the hills.

A few days later, Tess is kidnapped by the Blackfeet warrior, Brown Otter, who she talked to before because he wants her to help the injured Storm-in-His-Eyes, the dead girl's brother. Storm is lying injured in a nearby cave and needs her help. Tess agrees to help Storm once she sees how injured he is because she feels bad for him and because she promised the dying girl. Storm is out of his mind with fever for days as Tess tries to save his life.

Once Storm wakes up, he is not happy to see a white woman attending him. He has spent some time in the white world, where white women have brought him nothing but trouble. Now white men have unjustly accused him of stealing horses and killing his sister. Tess sticks up for herself to Storm and lets him know just how hard she fought to save his life. Storm is attracted to Tess because she has two things he finds irresistible - pluck and freckles. Tess is also attracted to Storm but realizes that nothing can come of it because they are from two different worlds.

Storm's friend Black Otter shows up with the tribe's Medicine Woman to help heal him. Once Storm is feeling better they tell Tess that it is time for her to head home, which Storm agrees with because he doesn't want to bring trouble to her life. On the way back to town, Tess is accosted by two white men dressed as Indians but she is saved in time by Storm and Brown Otter. They bring her to the Blackfeet village to help her heal from wounds she received when she fell from her horse. While in the village, Tess starts to fall in love with Storm who is the strong man she has always dreamed of having. She likes living with the Blackfeet Indians because they treat her as an honored Medicine Woman, not as a helpless female like the white people in town do. Storm is also falling for Tess but he will not think about allowing anything between them because Tess does not belong in his world and he refuses to live in the white world again. Plus he plans on killing the Marshall in retaliation for his sister and hunting down the men who attacked Tess, so he wants Tess back in town where she will be safe.

After one night of hot loving, Tess goes back into town to live. But the passion between them refuses to go away, causing both Tess and Storm to take a hard look at what is important to them and try to find a way for them to live together. Storm has a lot to work through because he needs to consider if he is willing to be with a white woman and what that would mean to his place in the tribe. He also needs to find the white men responsible for the "Indian" attacks before trouble is brought to his tribe - plus he and the Marshall are heading for a showdown. Will Tess and Storm find a way to work everything out so they can be together and will they survive the men out to get them? (Hint: since it's Romancelandia, the answer is YES).

I enjoyed this western/Native American romance. The two leads were very likeable. Tess was a very strong woman who wanted more than the life she had - marginalized by her brother, who didn't appreciate her nursing ablilities and wanted to marry her off to any eligible man. She wanted to fall in love with a strong man who would appreciate her and give her children but she was a spinster to most of the town's people. Storm saw her as a very desirable woman from the start and he appreciated her medical skills (well they did save his life). They found a wonderful love together and were willing to fight for the right to live together. Storm was a very honorable man who treated Tess with respect and didn't want to bring danger to her life so he tries to stay away from her because he has been branded an outlaw by the corrupt Marshall - but he feels so strongly for Tess that he just can't stay away.

Overall, this was a nice western/Native American romance that was well written. The characters were likable and the story was interesting. Plus who can resist a hot hero who is named Storm-in-His-Eyes?

Heart warming!
By A Customer
This is a heart warming book. Both Storm-In-The-Eyes and Tess Summar are wonderful characters and in love from the very beginning. There are very few denials of love between the two and they both, from the beginning, know they want ot live together. This is refreshing change from novels where both characters are at each other throats from the beginning to almost the end. But Ms. Camp does not bring them together too soon, if she does that the book would be over. Storm has to deal with the prejudices of the white's and he feels that he is a curse to his people. He fears what would happen if he brought Tess into his tribe. Tess, from almost the very start, wants to live with the Blackfeet. There she would be treated with respect as the Medicine Woman she is and not as a second class citizan. I hope you read this book. The descriptions are wonderful, the people heartwarming, and you will have chance to learn more about the Blackfeet and their culture.

Wow. Very well read. The story is so brutal that parts were hard for me to listen to. I realize it is not totally historically accurate, but what a story. Very compelling, but not for the weak of heart.

A People's History of the American Revolution: How Common People Shaped the Fight for Independence, by Ray Raphael

A sweeping narrative of the wartime experience, A People's History of the American Revolution is the first book to view the revolution through the eyes of common folk. Their stories have long been overlooked in the mythic telling of America's founding, but are crucial to a comprehensive understanding of the fight for independence. Now, the experiences of farmers, laborers, rank and file soldiers, women, Native Americans, and African Americans -- found in diaries, letters, memoirs and other long-ignored primary sources -- create a gritty account of rebellion, filled with ideals and outrage, loss, sacrifice, and sometimes scurrilous acts...but always ringing with truth.

From Publishers Weekly
California-based writer Raphael (An Everyday History of Somewhere; etc.) offers an accessible study of the American Revolution, as part of a series edited by Howard Zinn, and in the tradition of his A People's History of the United States. Most books on the Revolution focus on generals and kings, although scholars have, in the last two decades, turned some of their attention to the lives of ordinary people. Raphael transforms the best insights of that scholarship into a lively, readable narrative. Yes, kings and generals were important, but it was the people at large who brought about American independence. Even before the war started, ordinary people were involved in protesting British abuses, refusing to consume tea and other British luxury items. Women supported the Revolution by spinning their own cloth (rather than buying it from Britain) and working the farms their husbands left behind when the militia called them to the front. Young men eager to "git" their rights uncomplainingly subsisted on moldy bread while they camped out in the snow, waiting to encounter Redcoats. White colonists weren't the only Americans affected by the war. Abenaki Indians, for example, were paid to fight alongside the rebels. Raphael also shows how many slaves, infected with the freedom-fighting spirit, bid unsuccessfully for their own independence via insurrections, escape and reasoning. Both English and American armies wanted the slaves' loyalties, and the slaves, in turn, believed that if they served the winning side, they would gain freedom. Moving from broad overviews to stories of small groups or individuals, Raphael's study is impressive in both its sweep and its attention to the particular. The book will delight, educate and entertain all Revolution buffs. (Apr.)

From Library Journal
Raphael (Men from the Boys: Rites of Passage in Male America) narrates the American Revolution from the eyes of the common people who, without wealth, authority, or privilege defined and shaped the Revolution. He argues that the Revolution was largely the product not of the patrician classes of Virginia or New England but of the common people. Through letters, diaries, and other accounts, Raphael shows these individualsDwhite women and men of the farming and laboring classes, free and enslaved African Americans, Native Americans, loyalists, and religious pacifistsDacting for or against the Revolution and enduring a war that compounded the difficulties of everyday life and that resulted in a higher percentage of American civilian and military deaths than any of America's other wars except the Civil War. Written for the lay reader, this work synthesizes recent historical scholarship on the Revolution and maintains the high standards of editor Howard Zinn's "People's History" series. Strongly recommended for public and academic libraries.DCharles L. Lumpkins, Pennsylvania State Univ., State College

From Booklist
Not a narrative of battles, not an analysis of causes, not a paean to patriotism, not a tarring of Tories, Raphael's volume instead collects the experiences of ordinary people during the American Revolution and sutures them into a story. And that story is that the rebellion and war inescapably influenced everyone--farmers, townspeople, women, Indians, free blacks and enslaved blacks, plutocrats and proletarians. And a list including such categories indicates the class-consciousness of this, the inaugural volume in a series overseen by leftist historian Howard Zinn. A synthesis of radical historiography on the Revolution already exists in Gordon Wood's The Radicalism of the American Revolution (1992), so the unique value of Raphael's work lies in its mining, from extant primary sources, of the extraordinary recollections of ordinary witnesses to history. Patron demand for Raphael's tome may never be as high as that for the most popular Revolutionary War narratives and biographies, yet this book constitutes a substantial alternative to "great-man" approaches to the upheaval. History you can believe - Imagine that !
By Daryl Anderson
What great news to hear that Howard Zinn and the New Press are creating a "People's History" series!
Even better news is the outstanding job Ray Raphael has done of this first effort in that series. He has taken on the overall approach of the 'original', Zinn's "People's History of the United States" and applied it to the "creation myths" of our country in a way that creates real history which is captivating even as it strips the gloss from the schoolboy history handed on for generations.
The really nice thing is that Raphael has accomplished this with a voice that is unique to himself and to this book. No mere expansion of a chapter from the earlier Zinn book, this. Even having read Zinn's book, I found that this one retained the same ability to amaze me with fundamental reexamination of core beliefs.
At its center this book is, more than anything else, a study of how revolution happens. As such it is important reading for anyone who considers how fundamental change might happen in this country, if ever, again. The real myth of our history is not so much the focus on individual heroics or great battles as the implicit claim that our revolution fell into place so neatly, so quickly. Somewhere between chapters 3 and 5 in our history books the Brits passed some taxes, the Colonists rose up in righteous indignation, the battle was at hand - then won.
Raphael demonstrates at length, through original sources created by regular folks, that the whole business was much longer work than that. People don't just rise up overnight, casting off habits of mind and cultural expectations of what can and cannot be done. People don't just sit down and pen some pamphlets or high-sounding declarations and raise armies.
This book shows how, over decades, a broad sweep of reaction against oppressive institutions by everyday people built a solid groundwork which meant that the final "revolution" was neither unexpected nor un-practiced. He describes how many earlier uprisings, revolts, and proto-revolutions radicalized the populace and eroded assumptions about rights of elites. He describes how the vast majority of disenfranchised poor played a fundamental role in shifting those assumptions.
Throughout he reminds us of what a complicated business it was. From the broad in scope - the impossibility of raising a standing army from reluctant and other-committed farmers and family men, (and the consequential injection of a military draft and a messy cash-buyout business) to the narrow - why the "tea party" energized so many common folk to whom tea was the ultimate class icon.
Thoughtful people have learned to be skeptical of delivered history. But it really helps to have something real to counterbalance mere skepticism. This history is real, this is eye-opening stuff, this is the rest of the story.

By Nick and Lauren
Written in easy-to-understand prose, with moderate vocabulary and captivating historic vignettes, this is a the perfect book for an introduction to the how the American Revolution affected the common people. This includes the more marginalized groups, like Women, Native Americans and African Americans. An excellent starting point for delving deeper into the struggles of the masses during the war. The book includes a plethora of quotes from first and secondary sources, and facts abound. Sometimes, the prose gets bogged down in those facts and quotes, but they help assure the reader of the through research Raphael did for this work. It is important to remember that even this is, again, only part of the story. Granted it is a side not often told, and that alone makes it worth reading, but often the choices made by those in charge make no sense to those following order. This doesn't excuse the out-come, but it behooves us to remember to read and study all sides while forming an opinion. That being said, this book is an excellent addition to a library about the American Revolution.

ok but not the greatest
By Yalensian
Raphael's goal is an admirable one, and his topic is of great importance to any study of the American Revolution. Indeed, the "common people" (including women, slaves, and Indians) are too often overlooked in histories of the period, and their roles were critical. For example, the HUGE influence slaves had on how the war was fought in the South is sadly ignored, despite the fact that no understanding of that aspect is complete without it. That said, the book is not the whole story and is best read in combination with a work focusing on the "great men" and events "at the top"--perhaps Gordon Wood or Bernard Bailyn. Such a combination, I think, would provide a fuller portrayal. My major complaint with the book is its inclusion of page upon page of source material. I understand that for some this is a strong point of the work and that Raphael is trying to let these common folk speak for themselves. But the extraordinarily long quotations (sometimes pages in length) prevent Raphael's own voice and analysis from coming through. And in my opinion, the lengthy quotations from secondary sources could have been eliminated and summarized. He would have been well advised to limit the direct quotations and focus on a more in-depth analysis. After all, if one wanted to read straight primary sources, there are collections of documents available. But these flaws notwithstanding, the book deserves a read, if only to fill in the gaps left by high school history courses.
