A Great Update to Beeman's Book

I am a practicing electrical engineer and I have worked in design of power and control systems for 19 years.I am also a registered professional engineer and took the examination in electrical engineering. If there is a book (both good and bad) dealing with industrial electrical design, I probably own a copy. I have also authored a book on the subject myself called the Industrial Power Systems Design and Specification Handbook published by Fairmont Press in 1998 (it is no longer in print). The reference to Beeman in my review title refers to the 1955 book published by Donald Beeman on Power Systems. Beeman and his team worked for GE back in the "golden age" of the 1950's where the best minds for application engineering took the time and the effort to present the nuts and bolts of Power System Engineering in an easy to understand fashion for engineers and technicians. Westinghouse did the same with its book on power distribution engineering (I think that it is still available from the ABB).Sadly,GE never decided to update their reference book written by Beeman and I am not so sure they would (even though GE has very bright people) because of their ability to "sell" this knowledge rather than ensure that people like me (who have to apply their medium voltage distribution products) have a good starting point. Please understand that I am not "anti-business" and understand that the manufacturer has a right to expect that the people picking his products have done their homework. However, up until now, no one has felt it was "important" enough to review the fundamental calculations that power engineers should be able to do BEFORE they pick equipment or evaluate equipment performance (especially in medium voltage systems which behave more things to worry about). In this regard, Khan gives you the foundation you need. The choices of data and examples in Khan's book ensure that the engineer has a non-biased means to develop good calculations that are not unduly biased by either limited experience or by an equipment manufacturer. The problem with most books supposedly geared to "practical" application of electrical engineering knowledge is they are either too superficial (the author does hand-waving and you cannot see how they get from point "A" to point "B") or they are far too complicated for the average user to comprehend and hence have little use.Khan's book does not fall into that trap.There is a very good balance on the level of detail provided here.An example: This is one of the few texts that actually discusses impedance grounded systems and actually gives you the tables that are critical to applying the information (capacitive charging data).It is obvious that the authors scoured the archives of IEEE publications to get the seminal papers (such as those written in IEEE Industrial Applications Society Transactions)that are the "bread and butter" for good calculations.The authors deserve praise for picking the critical topics and then giving the reader enough information to be successful in design.Another example:the authors take some time to explain protective relaying and then give the reader a starting point for the proper settings.Khan's book is the definite analog to John Matthew's book (which was written for the commercial building business).If you notice,John Matthew's text sells on e-Bay or Amazon in its original form for twice what I paid for it when I bought it (John Matthew's book was re-issued by Chapman and Hall). Khan's text has the same potential to become a clasic as Beeman or Matthews.The only thing I would have liked to have seen is information associated with a brief summary relating the design calculations to the selection of actual equipment.In John Matthew's book, he takes the user from a load list through actual load calculations and finally to equipment selection in a "capstone" design problem. I refer to this type of example time and time again. This criticism is not necessarily the end of the world because if you do not have a good theoretical foundation, you are completely at the mercy of suppliers and manufacturer's representatives who may or may not understand what they are doing. Also, equipment technology does change over time as do the dimensions of equipment (such as medium voltage circuit breaker technology). Having said all of this,it is important to note that the original author is unfortunately deceased.The people who put the book together obviously understood Mr. Khan's vision and should be congratulated for a job well done. However, the trap here is to try to "improve" the book in subsequent editions without the guidance of a power engineering master like Mr. Khan obviously was.Lest you doubt me,the classic work "Elements of Power Systems Analysis" (a classic undergraduate power engineering text in its 4th edition at the time I bought it) was "improved" by a new author who added lots of matrix calculations that overly complicate the subject and leave a recent graduate unable to "see the forest from the trees". Sometimes,less is more and the current undergraduate textbook sham in power engineering is a tragic example of where we have devolved to.As another review pointed out for a text called Power Systems Analysis by Bergen and Vittal, the authors simply do not understand what graduates need to know in order to do their first job. Very few professors have the active consulting engineering experience required to balance theory with practice.If they decide to go to a second edition for Khan's book,they need a person of the late Mr.Khan's experience and his clarity for understanding what is important from what is trivial.

Great idea for a book

This book fills a much needed niche between theory and practical application. It will prove a great reference for inexperienced engineers. As an experienced (30 years) professional I would have liked the depth of subject treatment to be more than twice it is.

Excellent power book

Excellent book for the new or seasoned power electrical engineer. This book covers everything you need to know, and stuff you probably didn't know, to design nearly all aspects of industrial power systems. The one thing it doesn't do is go too in depth about any of the subjects, which isn't that detrimental to this book. Coverage of most of the subjects is sufficient for quick, accurate understanding, and the authors point out many, many additional references for the curious reader to investigate. This is a great summary book, and the summaries make some seemingly complex topics easier to understand. It allows a new concept to be more readily absorbed without getting bogged down by the minute details, but the summaries are still sufficient enough at least to mention those details that need to be considered in a design. Many of the chapters include an exercise for understanding, which is great. There are other books, classic books, that another reviewer has pointed out that are excellent, too. However, I highly recommend this book.

A delightfully endearing love story!

My Thoughts:

After discovering Stefanie London from the first Behind the Bar novel, The Rules According to Gracie, I can't stop myself from standing by with grabby hands for the next book. When I found out about the second book in the series AND that it was going to feature a fake relationship (that trope is like chocolate to me), I knew I needed it straight away!

I was charmed by both Libby and Paul from the very start. They have their own goals--hers is to get her product off the ground and his is to get his family to stop bugging him about getting married. Although they claim their fake relationship is all for show, their chemistry charges in to tell them otherwise. While I adored the romance (because it was a HECK of a hot romance), I think what I loved most was the unwavering support they had for each other. They both had their strengths and weaknesses, and each of them knew how to bring out the best in the other. Which is what made the romance more than just a fling for show.

Pretend It's Love was a delightfully endearing love story! I seriously couldn't stop loving Libby and Paul. The growth in the characters was believable, and their interactions super sweet. Paul's insistence on the nickname he gave Libby (Tiger) was both funny and lovely. Can I have more Stefanie London books NOW, please and thank you very much?

Sweet & Sexy

I admit, this story started off a little slow for me but at about 15% in, it got interesting and then I couldn't put it down.This story was sexy, sweet and just the slightest bit infuriating and I loved every second of it.

Paul, despite what he thought of himself, was so sweet and so supportive and inspiring. His family, as pushy and intrusive as they could be, love him with everything they have and just want the best for him but he can't help but feel judged by them and inferior to his "perfect" brother. Libby was so much fun and I love the fact that she is starting up her own infused vodka brand. I didn't like her father, not in the slightest bit. Feeling unloved and unwanted by her parents has Libby guarding her heart and focusing on being successful. Love just lets you down.

The two of them are perfect together and bring out the best parts of each other. They have this awesome chemistry and there is a natural ease to their friendship that makes it inevitable that they end up together.

If you love sweet, sexy fake-to-real romances then this is definitely a story you should pick up. The writing is on point and the characters are well-developed and relatable. I will absolutely be going back to read book one in the series and any books that follow.

I adore "relationship of convenience" romances and Pretend It's Love by Stefanie London is a wonderful addition to the trope. This book draws you in immediately, and the engaging story continuously captivates with each and every moment. The two primary characters, cocktail inventor Libby Harris, and bar manager Paul Chapman, have amazing chemistry, and their relationship is replete with desire, compassion, and inspiration. Ms. London is a new to me author, and I can't wait to read more of her work.

After carefully deciding that being a physician is not her cup of tea, Libby uses her expertise and instincts to create a line of vodka infused cocktails, geared toward the female population. All she needs is a distributor to get her product out there. Paul has a connection, his older brother Des, who just happens to own one of the trendiest bars in town. Libby needs Paul to help get her business off the ground and Paul needs Libby to save him from his overbearing family, who wants to see him married with children. A gorgeous woman on his arm will also help Paul get through Des's wedding next month, where he will have to deal his ex-fiancee, who cheated on him with his cousin, and is now married and pregnant. A favor for a favor is what they both need to reach their goals, and move past their previous relationship heartbreaks.

I loved this sweet and sexy story. Ms. London evolved the strangers to lovers relationship with transparent finesse, and there was never a moment that I did not want Libby and Paul to find their forever together. Libby and Paul are a unique couple and their sexy times are both sensual and hot. Libby's father was quite a character, with his nonyielding notions and lack of understanding. My heart broke for Libby, each and every time her father let her down. If you are looking for a fun, well-written book with characters that are easy to connect with, then add Pretend It's Love to your TBR list.

Everyone says to sucker tomatoes. Charles H. Wilber encourages letting 15 suckers thrive per plant. Everyone says that suckers do not produce many fruits. I have carefully followed his advice, and even this early in June, I have 20 tomatoes on one plant and 15 on my other plant. I am thankful I have found this excellent, instructive text.

This is a pretty good book. It could have had more specific info and color pictures would have been nice.You can get the majority of the info online through different forums pages. Overall, I enjoyed it and it will stay in my collection.

Perhaps it's qualities like sensitivity, craft, and dedication that keep physicians like Oliver Sacks in hospitals all day and at writing desks all night; if nothing else, these qualities shine in books like Awakenings. This powerful set of case histories rises above its pathological foundation to find new literary territory, a medical-spiritual synthesis equally stimulating for the mind and the soul. It's no wonder Hollywood producers chose to turn it into a feature film--anyone can see the universal human struggle against bondage and despair in these pages.

The sleeping-sickness epidemic of 1918 caused hundreds of survivors to slip into a bizarre rigid paralysis with similarities to advanced Parkinson's disease. These patients, only occasionally able to communicate or move, were nearly all institutionalized for life, their ranks increasing every now and then with similarly afflicted men and women. Sacks came to work at a long-term care facility shortly before the first exciting results with L-dopa and Parkinson's in the late 1960s; his patients soon embarked on dramatic, difficult recoveries from up to 50 years of torpor. He documents their spiritual and medical obstacles with great care to portray their individual personalities, long suppressed but finally released. Excellent!

Wonderfully written, but less than that of his other work...

If I had never read "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" before this book (both by the same author), I would have rated this as a five-star classic. Though as well written as the other work, this book presents his studies in a less humane, and more scientific way. Read the other work and one will sense the noticeable difference in the way that Dr. Sacks approached his patients. When reading the "Awakenings", I felt as a detached bystander looking through the windows of his clinic and observing the patients. When reading "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat", I was so engaged by Dr. Sacks vivid descriptions of the patients, physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually, that it was as if I was face-to-face with the patients, and that I was connected in some intrinsic way to each and every one of them. Please please read the other work as well as this one.

Despite flaws, one of the most human books I've read

In 1969, Oliver Sacks gave L-DOPA (a recently released "miracle drug") to scores of his post-encephalitic Parkinson's patients. Most of them woke up - after essentially being in a state of sleep/death for over 30 years. They were the remnants of the great post-WWI epidemic and most spent virtually all their adult lives institutionalised. They were suffering from a specific "flavour" of Parkinsonism - and contrary to popular belief, this disease is not about shaking or tremors but more about the warping of an internal sense of scale (of space and time) which makes movement, thought and being human almost impossible. L-DOPA gave the patients a new lease on life, but at a terrible price.

The book chiefly outlines the case histories of individual patients in the course of the treatment. Although occasionally Sacks is repetitive from one patient to another (one of the book's flaws), his attention to detail, his degree of empathy and the vividness with which he describes the patients and their lives are breathtaking. The book gives an amazing impression of what it's like to go from being at a standstill (your mind being taken up by a map of a map of a map of a map...of nothing) to the frenzy of mania (one patient spoke at 500 words a minute).

Awakenings has inspired a Hollywood movie, dozens of plays, documentaries, theatrical productions and more. This is because the story is about so much more than a particular disease. It's about what it means to be human. And it's about the tremendous strength of the patients in the face of a disease that has to be read about to be believed - literally a living hell. Although Sacks seems almost mystical-dualist at times (the other main flaw in my opinion), his purpose is to bring the story to the world and to encourage a more wholistic, empathetic medicine that does not aim to reduce the human to symptoms and side effects, especially when it's completely counterproductive for certain disorders.

Very recommended despite some minor flaws.
