About The Author Amos Clarke has been working as a recording and mix engineer, songwriter and producer for well over 10 years. He’s worked extensively in live sound and as a bass player and vocalist in working bands that have gigged around the world. He’s also a lecturer at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand where he’s being lecturing at a tertiary level for over 15 years. He holds a diploma in audio engineering from SAE and currently runs sHOWpONY, a boutique recording and production studio in Auckland, New Zealand.

Perfect for Novice or Pro

Although I'm not a professional sound engineer, I very much enjoyed this book and have had fun tinkering with some software I've recently downloaded for my iMac. It really is amazing the differences that can be created with just a few modifications, as Mr. Clarke has pointed out in his useful guide. I can well imagine it would be very productive for someone with the proper equipment and a small studio.

In terms of the writing and layout, I don't think he could have done a better job presenting his tips. The directions were even quite easy for me to follow - a total novice. I downloaded a copy when he had it available as a promotional item, but it would be worth the cost for anyone interested in sound recording and small studio work. This is a highly recommended product for amateur or pro. I've had fun with it.

Great stuff, Mr Clarke

I am a musician, singer, songwriter, producer and have a home studio. I have had a number of songs on radio in my country. Having learned how to use my DAW effectively and how to use plug-ins and effects, I wanted to learn how to mix properly so that I could get better, wider, deeper punchier mixes, so that I could put my personal stamp on my songs.
I purchased Amos Clarke's kindle books - both that he has written and have truly benefited by his knowledge. I do know that one can learn a lot by experimenting on one's own, but if there is somebody out there who can cut to the chase and teach you great mixing techniques, why spend hours and hours scratching your head when he can help instantly to broaden your horizons on the said subject.

This was not way to useful for my level i guess. However, there are good tips for beginners. "Macro mixing for small studio" seemed more filled with really interesting approaches and advices.

About the Author
Jack English was formerly Assistant Chief Constable, Northumbria Police, and Director of the Central Planning and Training Unit, and Chief Examiner to the Police Promotion Examinations Board. He is author of; Police Training Manual, published by McGraw-Hill and Summonses and Charges, published by the Police Reviewing Company. He has edited Butterworths' Road Traffic Service and Butterworths' Road Traffic Bulletins. Richard Card is Professor of Law and Chairman of the School of Law at De Montford University, Leicester. He has written and lectured extensively in a number of areas of law, particularly criminal law. He is the sole author of Card, Cross and Jones' Criminal Law, and has also written eight other books.

She clawed her way into his heart and simply would not let go.

“In the very moment of my writing this, Kitty is lying in her basket, two feet from the computer. Her head is burrowed deep into the towel; her tail hangs a fraction of an inch over the edge of the basket. I get a bit of company, but nothing that disrupts me as I try to concentrate on my texts. She gets a comfortable basket to lie in and a window to look out of, if she so wishes, while a radiator under the basket spreads a pleasant warmth. And, like me, she gets a bit of company but nothing too disruptive. Again, we are both satisfied with the situation. Maybe this is what is known as friendship.” – pp. 70-71

When author Nils Uddenberg was 16 or 17 years old he vowed to never again own a pet. He simply did not want the responsibility. It was a pledge that he would keep for nearly six decades. Then one cold and gray November morning the retired professor of medical psychology discovered a fluffy little tabby cat perched on his garden gate. Though Nils did absolutely nothing to encourage the creature to stay this cat was bound and determined to make this place her home. Over the next few months that cute little ball of fur would melt his heart and ultimately become an important part of the family. He would call her “Kitty”. Nils Uddenberg reveals his most intimate thoughts about this improbable relationship in his marvelous new book “The Old Man and the Cat: A Love Story”. For those who love cats this is a story that is sure to warm the cockles of your heart.

I was bracing to be disappointed as I thought “The Old Man and the Cat” got off to a rather sluggish start. Fortunately about 15 or 20 pages into the story the author began to command my attention and he managed to keep me on board the rest of the way. Cat persons can certainly relate as the author talks about how “Kitty” goes about the business of living her life. “Kitty” is quite playful, an avid hunter and gets into scraps with the neighbor cats every now and then. Sound familiar? The author describes in considerable detail his emotions while he observes "Kitty" in all of these different modes. Uddenberg also talks about how he feels on those rare occasions when his “Kitty” turns up missing. He writes: “When "Kitty" suddenly disappears it affects me more than I could have imagined. I am cut down by a sense of acute helplessness that I can hardly bear even to acknowledge”. We can all relate to that feeling of desperation when our cat does not come home when expected.

“The Old Man and the Cat: A Love Story” was originally written in Swedish and has been translated into English by Henning Koch. It is impossible to know if anything significant was lost in the translation but I tend to doubt it. Sprinkled throughout the text are wonderful illustrations by Ane Gustavsson that will greatly enhance your enjoyment of this charming little book. At just 164 pages “The Old Man and the Cat” can be read in just a couple of sittings. This is a great gift idea for that cat person in your life. Recommended!

CATS ADOPT YOU - - - YOU DON'T ADOPT THE CAT

I received an ARC [Advanced Reader’s Copy] of this book from the publisher through a GoodReads giveaway; and the following is my honest opinion.

My dear OH and I are cat lovers and have at least one cat for over 20 years. And no matter what you might think you might out, as the author of this book found out, a cat adopts/owns you and not the other way around.

Shortly after the author and his wife return from a trip to Namibia in Africa a small kitten appeared at their bedroom window. The kitten kept on appearing in their garden before Mr. Uddenberg realized it must have been spending the nights in the shed he had, sleeping curled up on his gloves. After returning home from a two-week trip to Stockholm he figure it would no longer be there, and would have gone back home. However it was still there, and began to increasingly endearing itself to the author.

Once he allowed it to enter their home, he began to use his experience as a psychologist to analyze its behavior. The author never had a pet, and didn’t expect to have one now, but he did. The author wrote this book to show how their relationship grew and both developed a need/respect/understanding for each other. This is endearing book for anyone who loves the relationship they share with their own cats/dogs.

When we adopted another cat when our second cat had died, we were taken into one of the rooms the shelter had their cats in and while there were several beautiful young cats there, one in particular came over to me and gave me head-butts on my hand demanding my attention to rub it and to take it home.

In reading/reviewing the ARC copy of this book several things had to be kept in mind. First and foremost is the fact that it’s an UNCORRECTED proof copy of the book; meaning errors might be found throughout the book. Furthermore, since this book is the English translation from the original Swedish, errors might be found regarding the translation as well. When I looked at the preview pages of the German translation of this book, I read the first paragraph, and given the knowledge I still have from my college days, I found it to be more of what the English translation should look like.

There’s been no change in the preview pages for this book from what I have in my ADVANCED UNCORRECTED PROOF copy so I’ve got to wonder if the necessary changes have been made, which leaves me to give this book 3 STARS. However, I love the endearing story which has been presented here I would like to give it 5 STARS. In the end, given the quandary which has presented itself here, I’m giving this book 4 STARS.

Cat Teaches Old Man New Tricks

I received a review copy during the summer and its charms lingered into fall. It has deceptively simple style which unwittingly binds the reader under its spell: just as cats do. A retired Swedish shrink who thinks he doesn't like cats gradually falls for a stray cat who shows up at his door. The process of him falling in cat love is slow, deep and poignantly sweet with touches of Nordic humor. The author displays a Zen beginner's mind about insights into cats, proving cats can teach an old man new tricks.

UPLIFTING - Blends Science, Spiritual, Practical

I first encountered Lisa Garr when she reached out to interview me about my Open Source Everything Manifesto, and I found her to be one of the most charming as well as versatile (beyond intelligent - open and creative) interviewers I have ever met. That secured my attention going into the future and now I follow her offerings with great interest.

This book could not be timelier as America the Beautiful - and tens of millions of families -- enter a time of great stress and general dysfunction.

Although I have been reading in the Consciousness & Social IQ arena, where I have 300 books so-tagged, and I end this review with five other books that I recommend in addition to this one, I found this book to be a very uplifting and practical book, one I could draw from for immediate action.

It's one of the best combinations I have read where first person experience, scientific findings and technology (for example EEG or electroencephalogram), and spiritual insights and practices have been brought together. It is also unusual for integrating direct references to many of the respected and even revered great souls and hearts and minds that the author has interviewed over time.

I do want to list just a very few of the many names that are integrated into this book to the point that it could be viewed as a quick once over of the best of the best integrated practices for whole body-mind-heart-soul health. They include EEG "top guns" Dr. Barry Sterman and Dr. Siegfried Othmer with Dr. Susan Othmer and below just five of her published integrated sources:

Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Your Life
Life After Life: The Investigation of a Phenomenon--Survival of Bodily Death
Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One

In short, for those familiar with this genre of books, I recommend Becoming Aware as a lovely capstone endeavor sure to satisfy, and for those new to the genre, this is a wonderful starting point for entry into what is becoming one of the most important literatures of our time.

I have many notes throughout the book and will not spoil the discovery process by putting them all here. The bottom line: this book articulates, in a most uplifting manner, how YOU are in charge of your mind, your heart, your feelings, your body, and your life. With this book in hand, all of those can be uplifted.

Apply the psychology of Becoming Aware for Your Personal Success

The reason I recommend this book is because Becoming Aware is an authentic story of how one person can make a difference and then shares with you as the reader how to do this for yourself. It is a heartfelt “how to” path of the realistic steps and lessons you can apply in your own life without “changing” who you are at the core. Lisa Garr defines how to repattern your own brain for a maximum awareness of life and personal success. To her it is clear we all have the opportunity to participate in conscious conversations and the choice of “Becoming Aware”.

A year a nearly fatal mountain biking racing accident, Lisa Garr went back, competed and amazingly WON the California State Mountain Biking Championship on the same mountain (page 44). What makes this story so applicable to the reader is the book takes you on a clear path of how to make your life better and more aware in key areas by actively engaging developing your own understanding of psychology, neuro linguistics and spirituality.

The book showcases the psychological, emotional, spiritual and physical journey the author had to endure re-learning how to do many tasks we all take for granted like being able to speak. With her brain injury Lisa literally had to repattern (today it is often referred to as neuroplasticity) her brain to learn to complete sentences and have meaningful conversations with people. The book invokes clear images of how we all can learn to have more conscious conversations if we become aware. She had to learn to reconnect her brain synapses to accomplish neuro linguistically what most of us take for granted everyday however; her message is this process actually led her to understand how this experience consciously woke her up to become aware. From this tragedy she she embarked on a journey to become a top radio, Internet and tv talk show host. The book covers the main topic areas such as: Manifesting What You Want, Unlocking Your True Potential, Understanding How to Use Stress Effectively, Overcoming Life’s Roadblocks, Experiencing Death and Loss, Embracing Your Own Body, Learning to and How to Keep Your Inner Child Alive. The author is an expert in these areas after conducting more than 4000 interviews on applied psychology, success, self esteem, personal transformation, neuroscience and more with over 1500 guest speakers.

The book, Becoming Aware is written thoughtfully and from the heart.

Already one of my Top 5 favorite books

This book is really two stories. The first story is how Lisa broke her brain and healed it, and the second story is how we can use those techniques in our own life, to raise our own level of consciousness.

It's really engaging storytelling, too. As someone who is physically active and quick-witted, I could not imagine going through what Lisa went through, losing control of her speech and mental faculties.

Seeing how she pieced her brain back together was fascinating. I love how she refused to be defeated, and built a stronger mind with greater habits - that's intentional living.

I've already started incorporating some of these exercises and perspectives in my own life, and I have definitely noticed my own awareness and consciousness increasing. Now my decisions are more intentional, less hurried, and less stressed.

I've read dozens of books by Hay House authors, and this one is definitely in my top 5.

Grade 4 Up-This recording of A Christmas Carol is a pleasant way to spend a few hours during the holiday season. Although abridged, it retains the spirit and language of Dickens' original manuscript. Anton Lesser gives a superb performance as the narrator and the voices of the characters, especially when portraying the Cratchit family, the Christmas Spirits and the London dialects. All characters are easily understood. Appropriate music begins and ends each cassette. This enjoyable retelling would be especially appropriate for family listening and a special treat for English literature classes.

Possibly the best "Christmas Carol" ever

Many versions of Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" are actually abridgements (done more or less smoothly) but this version is complete and unabridged. Even if you think you are familiar with the book you may find upon reading this one that you previously had read a shortened version! The completeness of this volume would be reason enough to add it to your library, but the quality of the pages, typeface, and above all the lovely illustrations scattered throughout further commend it. I have bought copies for all 3 of my grown children--because every family deserves to own a complete version of this classic story and this one is the best I have ever seen.

Read the book the way Dickens wrote it..........

I hope all readers take time to read A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the original language Dickens used in the 1840's. Dickens' language remains humorous, descriptive and insightful and not inaccessible to most modern readers especially with the use of a good glossary. This is a great read aloud for families at Christmas time and also a great introduction to Dickens and other Victorian writers. Don't settle for an abridged version. Read this masterpiece the way it was intended

Beautiful Volume

I collect "A Christmas Carol" and this is a particularly lovely volume. The illustrations are wonderful and the overall quality, printing, binding and paper, is terrific. This is definitely in my top three favorites of all the different versions I own.
