Brett McLaughlin has become one of the most well-known authors and programmers in the Java and XML communities. He's worked for Nextel Communications, implementing complex enterprise systems, at Lutris Technologies, actually writing application servers, and most recently at O'Reilly Media, Inc., where he continues to write and edit books that matter. Good first book on Ajax in the "Head First" tradition

Asynchronous JavaScript And XML, or its acronym, Ajax, is a Web development technique for creating interactive web applications. The intent is to make web pages feel more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire Web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user makes a change. This is meant to increase the Web page's interactivity, speed, and usability.
The Ajax technique uses a combination of:
1. XHTML (or HTML), CSS, for marking up and styling information.
2. The DOM accessed with a client-side scripting language, especially ECMAScript implementations like JavaScript and JScript, to dynamically display and interact with the information presented.
3. The XMLHttpRequest object to exchange data asynchronously with the web server. In some Ajax frameworks and in certain situations, an IFrame object is used instead of the XMLHttpRequest object to exchange data with the web server.
4. XML is commonly used as the format for transferring data back from the server, although any format will work, including preformatted HTML, plain text, JSON and even EBML.
Thus, like DHTML, Ajax is not a technology in itself, but a term that refers to the use of a group of technologies together.
"Head Rush Ajax" uses the head-first approach that has worked so well in books on Java, Design Patterns, and HTML. This book is aimed at teaching designers, JavaScript programmers, and your 'everyday' web developer about Ajax. Many of the other books on Ajax are focused on little widgets and gadgets and tricks. However, none of them seem to actually talk about the web browser, asynchrony, and really focus on what Ajax is. Ajax may be a combination of technologies that have been around for a while, but that hardly means that everybody really gets what all those technologies are. So this book talks about JavaScript, and the web browser, asynchronous requests, and the Document Object Model, rather than blazing through that in 65 pages and spending 400 pages talking about esoteric user interface patterns and server-side languages. This is a book that a normal web developer or even a motivated designer can pick up, and get some light bulbs to turn on.
Readers will have their first working application before they finish Chapter one. This book skips all the hype, talks about what the web browser is, and how it's a far richer and more important player in web applications - and especially in asynchronous applications - than most people realize.
I highly recommend it to readers who are intimidated with the alphabet soup of acronyms and technologies that web development has become.

1. Using Ajax - A short overview of the technology.
2. Speaking the Language - Discusses asynchronous JavaScript. Learn how to send requests on different browsers, master "ready states", "status codes", and some extra dynamic HTML tricks.
3. She Blinded Me with Asynchrony - Learn how to send users' requests to the server while users continue to work while waiting on a response.
4. Web Page Forestry - Using the Document Object Model you start writing code that updates web pages on the fly.
4.5 A Second Helping - Shows more DOM via a nifty DOM-based application. Learn some new event handlers, how to change a node's style, and create a user-friendly dynamic application.
5. Saying More with POST - Eliminates send(null) and shows how to send more data to a server in your asynchronous requests.
6. More Than Words Can Say - Talks about using XML in your requests.
7. A Fight To the Finish - Talks about JSON and XML, two different formats for transmitting data in asynchronous requests.

Not for experienced web developers

I was casually browsing Ajax books in the local Borders store, and was pleasantly surprised to find Head Rush Ajax. Having been a great fan of Head First Design Patterns, I decided to buy Head Rush Ajax on the spot. But I have to say I was a tad disappointed, and returned the book.

Likes:

1. For people new to the Head First teaching approach, there's a high probability that they will like and embrace this style. People already familiar with it will know what to expect and won't be disappointed.

2. Each major concept of Ajax (Asynchronous requests, GET, POST, XML, DOM) has been explained in a separate chapter with examples that make sense.

3. The author clearly states that the intention is only to teach the basic minimum needed to understand and build an Ajax application, and he lives up to that promise.

Dislikes:

1. Even though the author states his intention about teaching the basic minimum early on, he takes far too many pages to do the same. An experienced web developer can easily get all that he/she can from this book in a single day of reading. At the end, I was left with the feeling "Is that it? For all these pages?"

2. On a few occasions, I felt the Head First approach had been stretched way beyond limit. The notion of repeating a piece of information so that it sticks in the brain has been done one time too many. It has been done right in Head First Design Patterns, but not here.

We all learn in different ways

Some people prefer dense reference-like texts while others get droopy eyelids after just a few pages. Face it--this is complex material we are trying to learn. The O'Reilly Head First series has really figured out how to present concepts that can be difficult to understand, especially for people who are new to the field, in a way that makes it easy to learn.

If you are new to Ajax or if you have some experience with it but want to fill in the gaps, this is a great book.

The Disciplined Leader TRUMPS All Other Leadership Books IMHO!

This most recent book from this organization is absolutely ASTOUNDING! The last book they had was more "testimonial" driven ... but, THIS book, is more about actual instructions on making the commitment, exercising courage, managing things that worry you, encouragement to 'know yourself', being truthful, having humility, how to zero in on your values .... along with a GREAT chapter on how to get out of your own way.... I of course, have become victim to this, and this of course, is of GREAT encouragement.

I have realized, that even the best of the best need lessons... Even the best golfers in the world need help ... They all need some kind of tune up on a regular basis.

Leaders are not any different --- Every leader needs some kind of tune up on a regular basis ... and this book does JUST that.

It truly has helped me to realign what I 'thought' I was doing right... It is a book of encouragement ... and uplifting....

I am also using this book from a personal perspective as well ... Being overweight ... THIS book is an excellent means of encouraging me to make a change in my own life where, for most of my life, my attitude and approach have been cattie-wompus....

I'm already looking forward to the next one....

A Book About How to Be, Not Just How to Act

John Manning’s book reads like a daily leadership devotional. These 52 lessons apply to any leader in any industry or context. The Disciplined Leader delivers sound advice not simply on how to act, but on how to be in order to become a better leader. The book deals with the need to evaluate and evolve one’s attitudes and perspectives as a means for better performance outcomes.

There are so many ways to use this book to improve as a leader and as a team. I will read these lessons repeatedly as part of my effort to continuously look inward at the barriers that I’ve placed between the people on my team and their performance potential. I will also use this book as a 360º teaching tool to begin weekly team meetings. Everyone on your team is a leader at some level, and the book's advice applies to them as well.

Many of the other books that I’ve read about leadership espouse a specific leadership style, process, or context such as leading millennial workers. In The Disciplined Leader, Manning recognizes that there is no one size fits all leadership style. “There’s no perfect leader…” he writes in the opening sentence of the book. Instead, he focuses on the best practices of developing oneself into being a better leader.

A must read for anyone looking to develop a people focused leadership style

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about goals and just plain getting things done, is that you need to break them down to work on them in pieces. It holds you accountable and makes life a whole lot less complicated and overwhelming. In tackling any project I take it one step at a time and pace myself so that I can succeed and, in the case of learning, absorb information.

I am continually trying to refine my leadership style and discover how I can be a more effective transparent and effective leader in everything that I do. I Thought This Family Could Not Get Any Better....

Oh Mallory, you just keep getting better and better! I like how you give us fresh situations, fresh family dynamics and two new characters to LOVE!!!!!!

Mick and Roz are up there with Sal and Gemma as being my favorites. It's ironic however, that Mick has beef with Sal (which I cannot wait to see how it plays out; especially when he realizes he is wrong) and they are so much alike.

I am so team Mick....I am so happy this book was released this early following on the heels of the first one. Mick is the perfect embodiment of all the Sinatra men...he's a thug,a father,a friend, and most of all a consummate lover...Roz is his perfect anchor...the family reunion is an event that had to go down the way it did. I wonder if the next one will have something to do with Roz's best friend Betsy and her no good boyfriend Jason..or the Nat Bianchi debacle....can't wait to find out. Thank you Mallory for your consideration of your fans by not letting us wait so long for a sequel.

What can I say! A grand slam Ms Monroe. That doggone Betsey and Carolyn were crazy, Carolyn trying to stir Roz up about Mick and Betsey, jealous and silly as all get up. Mick was in fine form and Roz is definitely ride or die. Love that the kids are getting closer to their dad. It was good to see Charles and his family. I need another book! ASAP. lol. I

Which is fine, except when they scaled the book down they ...

I found this book in the library of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and ordered it immediately. Apparently the edition in the library was the original, not revised, version, which was about twice as large as this one.

Which is fine, except when they scaled the book down they just shrunk the page layout without actually revising anything. The text has become microscopic and hard to read, and the illustrations have become muddy messes. There are printing problems here and there where the markup language is still in the text so you get "See Fig 4.3 ." and no actual figure.

While the book itself starts out very basic (like elementary school basic on terms like shape and color), each lesson is rated for difficulty and the stuff around levels 3-7 is a great quick primer for non-architects to discover how architects think. I suspect the general history of architecture section would be really great if the illustrations of the buildings were their original size.

Buyers-- if you can find the original edition used then grab it (Amazon doesn't seem to sell it)

Mr. Winters, please find yourself a new publisher and do a "restored" edition.
