This is a historical novel of the Turkic conqueror Timur-i Lang (Tamerlane in the West). Works best as a violent sort of narrative biography

Considering we're talking about one of the most sadistic tyrants of the early 15th century, I really expected to enjoy Pyramid of Skulls: A Novel of Timur, Warrior and Emperor more than I did. It's not that it's a bad novel, I just found it hard to get involved in the story. I couldn't quite bring myself to give up on it, but it was a bit of a struggle to keep going back to it.
Martin Fruchtman has clearly done his research, and he does a superb job of conveying not just the horrors of war, but the practicalities of torture and intimidation. He paints an interesting picture of the political and religious landscape,and really develops the elements of the various cultures that come together. Timur is a difficult man to build a story around, since he's completely abhorrent and unlikable, but there is no denying he is a brilliant leader. He's not a man you enjoy reading about, and certainly not a hero to tie your hopes, but he is fascinating on an intellectual level.
It's David, Timur's Jewish doctor, who makes the story accessible, his presence an interesting narrative trick on behalf of Fruchtman, and one that allows for some thought-provoking observations on just how little we, as a society, have changed over the years. He drives the story forward, connects the various plot threads, and 'speaks' for the reader in many ways. While the book didn't entirely work for me as a novel (in terms of protagonists and villains, story arc, etc.), it certainly did work as a sort of narrative biography, which I do enjoy, but not with the all-consuming, complete immersion of an epic novel.
It's an easy story to become overwhelmed by, especially with the gratuitous gore and relentless carnage, but worth sticking with if you're at all interested in the history of warfare, conquest, empire building, and religious fanaticism. Well-written and well-researched, it's definitely worth a read for the right audience.

Enjoyable and Relevant Historical Fiction

This is a historical novel that centers around Timur (or Tamerlane) the Conqueror, grandson of Genghiz Khan and a critical leader of the Mongols, who had a great impact on Eurasia in the 14th and early 15th Century. Before reading this book, I knew about Timur that (1) he was one of history's greatest killers; (2) that he turned Samarkand into what must have been an amazing metropolis. Martin Fruchtman has built his image of Timur from historical records of that era, and manages to plumb the various currents of Islam at the time and their relationships to Jews and Christians and even European merchant culture of the time, while telling a good story primarily through the eyes of Timur's Jewish court physician and later viceroy. At times, the novel follows a European serial killer who is adept at dismembering prostitutes, cultural and geopolitical and political issues in Timur's court, a military campaign against Syria and the Assassins, and the philosophical and social develpments of Islam at that era, which the author considers a foreshadowing of modern currents of religious extremism and anti-tolerance in that religion. There are details of the state of medicine and military arts in China, the Mongols, and Europeans and some insightful social history -- especially with respect to the relationships between men and women of the era. Fruchtman sets up a good plot and moves his characters methodically through it, although I found some of the really interesting parts (to me) such as the quest for the serial killer were eclipsed by the plot-line dealing with the machinations amoung the competing courtiers of Timur.
There is a lot of sadistic killing and sadistic rapine in this book, which I believe to be reasonably related to both the plot and the history of that era and culture. (This is not a criticism, but this is NOT a book for the squeamish.) In some ways, I was reminded about some of the more graphic (not in the sense of comic books) novels related to the Nazis on the Eastern Front of WWII (i. e., "Cross of Iron"), and the sadism and brutality and outright evil was taxing reading at times. The complex plot and subplots are generally competently handled, as is the basic narrative of the characters and dialog, but I wish there had been deeper probing of the "hypothetical" character of Timur. Fruchtman does a fine job when he is using "historical sources" as a takeoff point for his characterization, but his characters lose immediacy as people once off that familiar footing.
When I evaluate historical fiction, I use these categories and give this novel the following grades:
(1) Historical accuracy -- A -- I did not find any anachronisms in the descriptions or the characters, and was surprised to learn of some existing technologies at that time.
(2) Relevance -- A -- I learned some things from the encapsulated history that offer some context of things going on in current events.
(3) Plot -- C+ -- the author covers a lot of ground, and sometimes leaves off of tracks I would have enjoyed following more closely.
(4) Characterization -- B -- The primary characters were of great interest, and the supporting characters not so much.
(5) Believability -- B -- most of the scenes, especially military ones, are quite plausible, but some of the interaction within Timur's court was a bit flat.
In short, this was a pretty good novel about interesting characters in a fascinating time and place I knew little about.
RECOMMENDED -- subject to caution for violence.

A fascinating look at 13th century Eurasia

I received a free copy of this book with a request for review.
This historical fiction is well researched and centers around a region and period not usually found in historical fiction, that of Timur, a brutal 14th century Eurasian conqueror. It isn't for the faint of heart. Timur wasn't politically correct, diplomatic or gentle in his conquests, nor is the culture favorable to women, Jews or Christians. It is a fascinating look into the period, the merchant culture and Timur's military machine.
There's a lot going on in this story and at times it's difficult to follow and keep track of the cast of characters. The primary characters are well developed, particularly David, Timur's physician, vizier and eventual viceroy, but I didn't feel connected to any of them. I felt the historical period was the centerpiece, more than the characters who populated it. And that's okay - the author made it a fascinating centerpiece, particularly in light of the scarcity of any other similar fiction or nonfiction.
I'm giving this book a grade of 3/5 because I felt it fell short on character development, and at times poorly constructed sentences made it difficult to follow.
If you're interested in 13th century Eurasia, the Muslim world of that period, the conquests of Timur and the possibility that this might have some relationship to current events, and you don't mind graphic brutality and violence, this is a book I can recommend.
