Excellent Read

I purchased the book by David Long last year and read it thoroughly over the winter and again just before the hunt. The book is very well layed out and lots of short bits of information to summarize chapters and key points. He has a wealth of information and experience on Mule deer hunting in the West and it is easy to follow his train of thought in finding deer. I really liked the fact that he focused his book towards the public land DIY hunters. I also liked the DVD that accompanied the book, a nice addition for the cost of the book. Overall, it is money well spent and just might help you take a trophy mule deer. Remember - Luck favors the prepared mind, and you will need a lot of both to hunt the grey ghosts of the West.

If you want to hunt above the timberline it's for you

For the rest of us that have to hunt in pine forests or even deserts, don't expect any real revelations. Plenty of interesting stories, but I didn't find anything out that was some huge revelation. The lists of forage and the illustrations for glassing were interesting, but in all, I get the feeling that Mr. Long spends about as much time hunting low ground as I spend hunting at altitude. Certainly not the bible of public land deer hunting other reviewers led me to believe.
Great book if you live and hunt in the Rocky Mountains. Lacking for other habitat, public land or otherwise.

Public Land Mulies

This book covers it all. When reading it I kept thinking I can't believe he is sharing such cherished information. This book has definately given me a few more ideas for hunting mule deer. Makes me want to pack in even farther than I already do. I would definately recommend this book to a friend.
