Jim Cobb is the author of Prepper's Home Defense (2012) and Prepper's Complete Guide to Disaster Readiness (2013). He has been a prepper for most of his life and has worked almost twenty years in the security management and investigation fields. Practical and Comprehensive

The Prepper's Long-Term Survival Guide by Jim Cobb is an excellent overview of the skills and supplies you need for long-term survival. This is not a book on 72-hour kits or fundamental skills such as fire-making, though both of these topics do get some attention. This book, as the title suggests, focuses on long-term survival and self-sufficiency. Some of the topics include water procurement and purification, food -- hunting, foraging and trapping as well as tried and true methods of food preservation and storage (includes food recommendations), first aid and medicines (both natural and synthetic) that you need to have, hygiene, clothing and shelter, security (including how to harden your home or retreat), tools for maintenance as well as gardening, forms of communication, entertainment in a survival situation, bartering (what and how), and community survival (including quarantine and dealing with refugees). Several important checklists are included to help you analyze your own preparedness, and the suggestions are both practical and budget-friendly. There are also gear recommendations and plenty of resources, books and websites that you can utilize to assist you in becoming more prepared and self-reliant. This book gives a broad yet detailed look at what you need to do to prepare yourself and your family for virtually any long-term survival event, and it should be on the bookshelf of everyone who is interested in becoming more self-reliant or more thoroughly prepared for disasters and crisis events.

Horrible Book, nothing long term about it!

After reading Jim Cobbs book : Prepper's Home Defense: Security Strategies to Protect Your Family by Any Means Necessary, which I found to be pretty good I decided to order this new one.
The best example I can gave as how the book isn't about long term survival is the chapter on Food.
Cobb states that: " But the thought of trying to stockpile enough food to even feed just one person for a year or more, let alone an entire family, is just not feasible nor practical for most folks.
Even if you could afford the expense, where would you keep it all?"
So, I guess the Mormons don't have a clue what they are doing when it comes to food storage? How about that Survivalists, which I have been from the 80s, considered a years supply as the minimum for food storage?
You could buy a years supply from many on-line vendors ( you would really need two years for a realistic one year) and take up about a closets worth of space. Surely that is feasible ? And how is having a years worth of food NOT practical? For long term survival?
Cost wise? Matters how you set up your food storage, it could cost as low as a new 48 flat screen or as much as a vacation. Guess it matters what you truly deem as important.
The author suggestion of three months of food only will get most people killed. I mean we are talking LONG TERM SURVIVAL, are we not? Not short term weather preppers. Most winter seasons are longer than three months, let alone the time needed to grow new crops.
Then he says that long grain rice will go rancid from the oils.
What?
Not brown rice, just long grain rice. You know, the kind that all LTS dealers sell and will last 15-25yrs.
He also says to stay away from lard and shortening because vegetable oils have a longer shelf life.
I guess he doesn't know that vegetable oils are almost rancid when you buy them and that's why they can go bad in such a short time. Lard and Coconut oil are the ones that last the longest, then shortening, and then olive oil.
The raising and growing food part is all of seven paragraphs long.
Most of the rest of the book is the same, a paragraph or two on most subjects.
This book is not worth your time or money.

Great info for preppers and those new to prepping alike

This book contained quite a bit of useful information, tidbits, and great role scenarios to consider when prepping. While written in an easy to follow format that follows journal entries and then applies them to real world situations. While some reviewers have said that this book is not complete, I do not feel that any book on prepping can be complete, or even SHOULD be, for that matter. Preppers and prepping presupposes the idea that there will always be unforeseen circumstances as well as more information to acquire and skill sets to learn, since it is about ultimate survival situations, after all.
This book takes a lot of the ordinary and turns it into a way to view prepping and survival that some people seem to gloss over or ignore. Not all preppers are like the ones you see on reality TV shows, and not all prepping is easily accomplished by ordinary people in that context, either. Therefore, this book takes into account that an average person may or may not have some of the latest and greatest items or monetary ability in hand in order to prep for survival like those we see on the reality shows, and makes it more within reach and takes a more realistic approach to how we should rationally prep as well as how we should do so in a way that will give us the best odds at survival.
Some of the best ideas presented are the ones that make us consider our skill sets in the event of collapse and WROL. Which skills will help us to barter with others the best, and which ones will be in most demand? Those are the ideas that will ultimately help to determine if we survive alone or if we can interact and barter with others.
While some of the things in this book may be unnecessary according to some reviewers, I feel that it has covered a wide range of topics in a concise and straightforward way, so that anyone can pick it up and see things from a perspective that perhaps they didn't previously consider, and then take that perspective and formulate a survival strategy to fit their lifestyle, and not some restricted method that only a few can follow, thereby making this book well-rounded and very informative for a much larger crowd of people, which in the end makes it even more valuable of a resource to those interested in survival.
