About the Author
Dutch Holland has been intimately involved in the introduction of technology into organizations in order to create business value for more than three decades. This is about process, not technology

The author writes the book with the assumption that the reader already knows what DOF and the components associated with it are. In addition, the book does not do any sort of analysis of the various technical models/CEP engines/smart-SCADA devices out there that constitute the core elements of a DOF system.
However, there is some good value in this book as it relates to the construction of a DOF plan from an organizational perspective and modalities for executing against the plan. It takes a good look at executive roles, organizational resistance to change, and the corporate requirements of deploying DOF. Although I found the somewhat fanciful tone of the book somewhat aggravating, I would still recommend it for business leaders and project managers.

"Exploiting The Digital Oilfield: 15 Requirements for Business Value" provides a sharp focus on the organizational requirements necessary to deliver the business value promised by Digital Oilfield (DOF) implementations. This book is written as a practical guide for DOF practitioners, Executive staff, and the change leaders on all sides of a DOF implementation.
This book takes a very complicated subject - leading the implementation of Digital Oilfield technology and provides a practical guide on how to deliver that complicated technology insertion into an enterprise to ensure that anticipate business value is delivered. Given the reality that up to 70% of large scale technology insertions in companies fall short of expectation in value delivered, this is a timely book, as DOF implementations continue to grow in Upstream O&G.
The book proposes a structure and approach called the "Business Value architecture (BVA). The BVA provides a framework or a system to fully realize the DOF business potential.
In effect the DOF BVA is a combination of three different structures or systems.
1) Strategic Business Architecture...DOF vision and strategic goals, measures and incentives.
2) Work Process Architecture...technical and business work processes needed to archive the organization's strategic goals.
3) Technical Process Architecture...the processes inside the IT or R&D organization to manage the digital resource required to enable work processes and enterprise optimization.
For me, a key element of the book dealt with the concepts of business and organizational readiness, necessary conditions for DOF, an enabling technology suite, to predictably deliver business value. There is no room in this book for let's do it and see how it turns out. The necessary Executive management care and attention to the full enterprise deployment of DOF, is paralleled to the level of effort, rightly expended, on other major initiatives supporting the corporate strategy.
All DOF implementations are challenging. Delivering the expected business value in support of corporate strategy is the prize. This book provides a very practical structure, the Business Value Architecture written in a how-to-do-it style to guide an enterprise to that prize.

Toward the Cultural Change Driven by the Digital Oilfield

Dutch is a master of explaining the complex in simpler terms. While the digital oilfield has been around for a decade, its implementation and cultural impact in an organization are still misunderstood and thus it is underutilized. The book is a plethora of excellent ideas for capturing value from this business model.
I would like to point out his discussion on cultural change in Chapter Seven; The Digital Oilfield Culture. Presently the industry undergoing significant transformation. Much of this is a result of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. I believe this transition will hasten the implementation of digital technologies, at least offshore. The main driver for this is the demand for greater safety in field operations.
As I read this chapter, I thought about the Relationships, Behavior Conditions (RBC) model of cross cultural negotiations. It appears that as Conditions (the implementation of the Digital Oilfield) change, individuals and organizations involved in it will change their Behavior resulting in a new set of Relationships. His five Steps for Culture Change is a straightforward road map that facilitates this change process. One hopes that the Digital Oilfield will result in a safer and better industry.
In his book, Dutch has laid out a change management process that will make the business value of the Digital Oilfield easier to attain; perhaps even faster. I highly recommend this very readable volume and while its focus is on the upstream oil and gas sector, many of this ideas and process are applicable elsewhere.
